Panic has gripped the administration and the public following the arrival of Bird Flu (H5N1) in Chennai. After the sudden death of hundreds of crows in various parts of the city, lab investigations revealed a shocking truth. The test report confirmed that the deadly H5N1 virus, also known as Bird Flu, is behind these deaths.

Government’s Strict Advisory and Safety Measures:

Strategy to curb infection: The Health Department has started working on a war footing to stop the spread of the virus. Officials have given strict instructions that dead birds should not be left in the open.

Biosecurity Protocols: Special guidelines have been issued for disposing of the remains of dead crows and poultry birds. To prevent the infection from spreading, orders have been given to either completely burn the carcasses or bury them in deep pits. People have been advised to avoid direct contact with dead birds and immediately inform the Animal Husbandry Department of any suspicious situation. Considering the threat of bird flu in Chennai, the administration has made strict security arrangements. Both the state and central governments are on high alert to prevent the virus from reaching humans.

Instructions Issued for the General Public and Officials:

Ban on direct contact: The advisory explicitly warns citizens not to touch any dead bird nor try to remove it themselves. If birds are found dead anywhere, it is mandatory to inform the local administration immediately.

Central Government Intervention: Viewing the seriousness of the matter, the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry has sent an official letter to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu. It instructs the immediate commencement of field surveillance in affected areas to determine the scope of the virus. The Ministry has emphasized conducting extensive testing and monitoring campaigns to identify and contain disease clusters.

H5N1 is a highly contagious and deadly strain of the Influenza A virus, known globally as ‘Bird Flu’. This virus primarily targets wild birds and domestic poultry populations and has the ability to spread very rapidly among them. Although its primary impact is seen on birds, its severe nature can be gauged from the fact that it sometimes crosses the species barrier to infect humans and other mammals. Despite infection in humans being rare, it is considered quite dangerous, usually spreading through direct contact with infected birds.

The biggest reason for considering the H5N1 virus very dangerous is that it directly affects human lungs. Although it does not spread easily among humans, if someone falls prey to it, the condition can become very serious. The risk of death is much higher in this compared to ordinary flu.

Upon infection, a person faces severe breathing difficulties and may develop severe pneumonia. The biggest concern is that if this virus mutates in the future and starts spreading easily from human to human, it could become a major pandemic threat to the entire world. This is the reason why doctors and scientists always remain alert regarding this.
