New Delhi: Opposition parties have submitted a notice of a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to the Lok Sabha Secretariat. A total of 118 MPs have signed this motion. However, one thing is particularly being discussed in this entire exercise—the signature of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is not included in this notice. Apart from this, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs have also not signed this no-confidence motion, raising questions about the opposition’s strategy and unity.
Allegations of Discrimination
According to sources, the opposition parties have submitted the notice of this no-confidence motion to the Lok Sabha Secretariat under Article 94(c) of the Constitution. Opposition MPs allege that the Speaker’s role has been biased. A total of four points have been mentioned in this proposal regarding the removal of the Speaker, based on which he has been accused of practicing discrimination.
A total of 118 MPs have signed this proposal, although Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs did not support it. The MPs bringing the no-confidence motion say that they respect the Speaker personally, but his attitude during the proceedings of the House has been biased. On the other hand, after receiving the notice, the Lok Sabha Speaker has instructed the Secretary General, Lok Sabha, to examine it and take further action according to the rules.
Opposition Wants to Send a Message
Congress MP Mohammad Jawed said that even though the opposition may not have sufficient numbers, it wants to send a clear message through this step. He said that the opposition is not going to back down thinking that the other side is powerful, unlike the government. Jawed alleges that the opposition was not given a chance to speak in Parliament and the impartiality expected from the Chair was not visible.
On the question of Rahul Gandhi’s signature not being on the no-confidence motion, he said that even if Rahul Gandhi has not signed, 118 MPs have supported this motion. At the same time, regarding the question asked about TMC, Jawed clarified that even though the signatures of Trinamool Congress MPs are not there, they stand with the opposition.
