On a small island in the southern Philippines, nature wreaked such havoc that thousands of lives were turned into piles of rubble in moments. This massive fire, which broke out around 10 PM in the Barangay Lamion area, raged furiously for about four hours. Since most of the houses here were perched on stilts and constructed using materials like light wood and dry thatch, the fire took a very aggressive form. Strong winds blowing from the sea gave wings to the flames, causing about 1,000 houses in this densely populated area to burn completely to ash. This fire incident has rendered thousands of families homeless in a single stroke, leaving them with nothing but burning memories before their eyes.

The flames engulfed the entire area, causing such destruction that scenes of ruin are visible everywhere. According to a PNA report, a rescue operation was launched on a war footing following this massive fire incident. Amidst the struggle to save lives, more than 5,000 people were safely evacuated using both land and sea routes. Currently, two relief camps have been set up to house these affected people, where they have been given temporary shelter. Thousands of homeless people are now spending their days in these camps, hoping for government aid and to get their lives back on track.

Amidst the scene of devastation, relief and rescue efforts have now gained momentum. On Wednesday, the Bongao local administration showed readiness by joining hands with the Bangsamoro Ministry of Social Services and Development and the provincial government to take charge of delivering aid to the victims. The administration’s first priority is to provide basic necessities like food and clean water to those thousands of homeless people.

Administrative Coordination: The Bangsamoro Ministry and the local government are working together on the rehabilitation of displaced families and meeting their immediate needs.

Medical Emergency: To prevent the risk of diseases increasing in the relief camps, special teams from the Bongao Rural Health Unit have been deployed. These health workers are treating those who have been injured due to smoke or stampedes.

Temporary Arrangements: Medical kits and essential medicines are being distributed to protect the affected people from the cold and diseases.

The Bongao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) has given a sigh of relief by confirming that no lives were lost in this massive fire incident. However, the fire department faced heavy challenges during the rescue operation. Several footbridges in the area were completely destroyed by the fire, causing fire personnel and water tankers to struggle significantly to reach the site of the blaze.
