The political atmosphere in the state has heated up significantly ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026. Meanwhile, the Election Commission (ECI) and the police administration have taken strict action following allegations of influencing and intimidating voters. Bidhannagar police arrested former Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor Nirmal Dutta on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. He is accused of allegedly threatening and intimidating voters and trying to influence the electoral process in the Bidhannagar area.
This action was taken following a complaint by Sharadvat Mukherjee, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Bidhannagar assembly seat. According to information, the BJP candidate approached the Election Commission regarding this matter on April 14, 2026, and also filed a formal complaint with the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner.
After receiving the complaint, the police started an investigation, based on which the former TMC leader was taken into custody. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing, and the administration is examining all aspects.
It is reported that Nirmal Dutta’s wife is also politically active and is the current Trinamool Congress councilor from Ward No. 38 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
According to reports, serious allegations of influencing and threatening voters during a public meeting have been leveled against former TMC councilor Nirmal Dutta. It is said that in a meeting held in Salt Lake on Monday, April 13, 2026, he made a statement that triggered a controversy.
It is alleged that during this meeting, he said that he has information about the people of the Duttabad area and he also knows who votes for whom. Additionally, it was claimed that he possesses information related to the Aadhaar cards and voter IDs of the people there.
After this statement came to light, political activity intensified and the matter reached the Election Commission. Subsequently, the BJP candidate filed a formal complaint regarding the entire sequence of events, based on which further action was taken.
Within 24 hours of filing the complaint, the police took swift action and arrested former Trinamool Congress leader Nirmal Dutta. After the matter surfaced, the investigation was intensified, and on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, he was produced before the Bidhannagar Court.
During the hearing in court, the police presented preliminary information and allegations related to the case. Following this, the court ordered him to be sent to judicial custody. According to the court’s decision, Nirmal Dutta will be kept in judicial custody for 10 days, where the further investigation will continue.
