Manipur: From the phase of violence to democratic restoration
The beginning of violence and deepening crisis: The story of instability and conflict in Manipur began on May 3, 2023. The ethnic violence that flared up in the state that day shook the entire country. Due to months of arson, clashes, and a complete collapse of law and order, normal life in the state had come to a standstill. Despite all efforts by the administration and security forces, sporadic incidents of violence continued, creating immense pressure on the then-state government.
N. Biren Singh’s resignation and President’s Rule: A major turning point came amidst the ongoing tension and increasing political deadlock in the state when then-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post. Following the Chief Minister’s resignation, a situation of constitutional machinery failure arose in the state. Keeping this in mind, on the recommendation of the Central Government, President’s Rule (Article 356) was officially imposed in Manipur on February 12, 2024. The main objective of this step was to bring the state administration directly under the Center’s control to prioritize security and peace restoration.
