Major Update on Women’s Reservation: Plan to Increase Seats by 50% in States

In the formula the government is working on to implement women’s reservation, the proposal to increase the number of seats is considered crucial. According to government sources, the existing Lok Sabha seats in each state could be increased by about 50 percent. This increase will be entirely proportional so that there is no inequality with any state. The government claims that the language of the proposed bill is clear and will be explained in detail in Parliament to avoid any misunderstanding.

However, politics on this issue has also intensified. Opposition parties are accusing the government of trying to push forward the delimitation (boundary marking) process under the pretext of women’s reservation. Parties from South India, in particular, have expressed concern. They believe that if the number of seats is increased from 543 to about 850, it will directly benefit North Indian states where the population is higher. This could relatively reduce the representation of southern states.

To decide on a strategy regarding this issue, the Indian National Congress has also called a meeting of its Parliamentary Strategy Committee. The party says that no injustice should be done to states that have performed better in terms of population control.

Congress’s stance is clear: it supports women’s reservation, but the government must maintain constitutional balance and equality between states. On the other hand, M. K. Stalin has warned that if the central government acts arbitrarily on this issue, the public may take to the streets. Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy has also expressed strong opposition to this decision, indicating a potential political confrontation.

Overall, the issue of women’s reservation is no longer limited to social justice; it has become a major national issue linked to political balance, regional representation, and the constitutional framework.
