Pakistan’s attitude once again appears to be the same old story. Unnecessary rhetoric and twisted logic have become the identity of the government there. Not sticking to their own decisions and then making baseless talks to clarify seems to have become a habit. The latest controversy is somewhat similar. Actually, Pakistan did drama for several weeks—sometimes threatening a boycott, sometimes placing different conditions. But finally, they agreed to play the T20 World Cup match against India on February 15. Everything seemed normal when suddenly a new ruckus arose in this whole matter.

After agreeing to play the match against India, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has now created a new controversy by tossing up the name of Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Significantly, Naqvi is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister. During a press conference, he claimed that neither he, nor the Pakistan government, nor Field Marshal Asim Munir are afraid of any warning from the ICC.

Naqvi said, “I am neither afraid of India’s threats nor of the ICC. The Pakistan government is also not under any pressure. As far as Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is concerned, you already know about him—he is never afraid.”

Asim Munir Became Field Marshal

Field Marshal Asim Munir is currently among the most discussed figures in Pakistan. His name remained constantly in the headlines following ‘Operation Sindoor’ conducted by India in May 2025. Under this operation, hideouts of terrorist organizations like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba were targeted, after which military tension between India and Pakistan increased significantly.

Following this sequence of events, the Pakistan government decided to promote General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal on May 20, 2025. After Ayub Khan, he became the second person in Pakistan’s history to receive this highest military rank. The Pakistani government and military officials have been describing Munir’s leadership as a symbol of the country’s strength and security. However, the whole world saw what Pakistan’s situation was during Operation Sindoor.

How Pakistan Cricket Board Took a U-Turn

It is noteworthy that initially, the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan government had openly threatened not to play the match against India. But later, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the stance changed after talks with the cricket boards of Sri Lanka, UAE, and Bangladesh, as well as the ICC. An official statement issued by the government stated that this decision was taken at the request of friendly nations so that the spirit of international cricket and its continuity remain intact.

The ICC also termed the meetings held in Lahore with PCB and BCB officials as positive and clarified that despite the major controversy involving Bangladesh, no penalty of any kind would be imposed. Thus, Pakistan finally agreed to play the match, but Mohsin Naqvi’s latest statement has once again given a political color to the whole matter.
