Murali Vijay’s 14-Year IPL Record: The Unbroken Sixes Challenge for Indian Batsmen

Every season new records are made in the IPL, but there are some statistics that grow stronger with time. One such record is for hitting the most sixes in an innings, which no Indian batsman has been able to surpass to date. This milestone was set 14 years ago by Murali Vijay.

When Vijay’s Bat Roared in Chennai

On April 3, 2010, playing for Chennai Super Kings at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, Murali Vijay played a blistering innings against Rajasthan Royals. He scored 127 runs off just 56 balls, which included 11 magnificent sixes.

Thanks to his explosive innings, Chennai posted a massive total of 246/5 and won the match by 23 runs. At that time, this score was considered one of the biggest totals in the league. The remarkable thing is that this record of 11 sixes in an innings remains a challenge for Indian batsmen even today.

Equalled After 14 Years, But Record Still Unbroken

Breaking this record in the Indian Premier League has proven difficult for even great batsmen so far. Explosive players like Rohit Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Shubman Gill have not been able to reach this milestone. However, in IPL 2025, young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi did equal this record. He smashed 101 runs off just 38 balls, hitting 11 sixes, at the age of just 14. He played this brilliant innings for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans.

Came Close, But Couldn’t Change History

Many batsmen came very close to this record but failed to break it. Sanju Samson hit 10 sixes in 2018, while Shubman Gill played an explosive innings of 10 sixes in 2023. Despite this, surpassing the 11-six mark remains a big challenge.

Will This Record Be Broken?

Now the biggest question is whether any batsman will be able to break Murali Vijay’s record in the Indian Premier League 2026? Given the rise of aggressive batting in T20 cricket, it doesn’t seem impossible.

However, hitting continuous big shots and so many sixes in a single innings is not easy. That is why this record remains strong even after so many years, and breaking it is still a significant challenge for every batsman.
