Uttar Pradesh is now rapidly strengthening its identity among states with major expressway networks in the country. A comprehensive network of 22 expressways is being developed in the state, which also includes Greenfield and connecting link projects.

In this sequence, preparations are underway to open the Ganga Expressway, Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway, and Ghazipur–Ballia Expressway to the common people soon. As soon as these routes become operational, the journey from Delhi to Purvanchal will not only be completed in less time, but traveling will also become smoother and more comfortable than before.

Ganga Expressway

The Ganga Expressway being built from Meerut to Prayagraj is counted among the state’s most important and ambitious projects. This expressway will interconnect several major districts including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj.

More than 96 percent of the main carriageway construction work has been completed, while the trial of the FASTag-based toll system is also reported to be successful. It is expected to be fully opened to the general public by March. As soon as it starts, the distance and travel time from Western Uttar Pradesh to Purvanchal will see a remarkable reduction.

Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway

The approximately 63-kilometer-long Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway (NE-6) is a 6-lane access-controlled highway, which can be expanded to 8 lanes in the future. An elevated section of about 18–19 kilometers has been built in this, making it one of the longest elevated expressways in the state.

Currently, it takes 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Kanpur from Lucknow, but after the expressway opens, this journey can be completed in just 35 to 45 minutes. Possibilities are being expressed that this project, costing about 4700 crore rupees, will be operational by the end of March 2026 or April.

Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway

The proposed Gorakhpur–Shamli Expressway, about 750 kilometers long, is going to become the state’s longest expressway. It will pass through 22 districts and directly connect Western Uttar Pradesh with Purvanchal.

The DPR of the project is ready and the land acquisition process is moving forward at a fast pace. Construction work is expected to start during 2026–27, after which the state’s road network will get further strength.
